Memorial Day Is One of the Deadliest Days for Teens to Be on the Road

Although Memorial Day is intended to be a holiday where we honor and reflect on the sacrifices made by those who gave their lives to protect our freedom, it is also the beginning of a period of time known as the “100 Deadliest Days on the Road.”

The first of the summer parties for young crowds tend to kick off on Labor Day weekend. And as more kids are getting out of school to attend parties and drink, it all combines to make summer a dangerous time to be on the road.

According to one study conducted by AAA, teenagers have the highest risk of being killed in a car accident than any other group. In 2016, more than 1,050 people were killed in crashes involving a teen driver during the 100 Deadliest Days. Compared to the rest of the year, there is a 14% increase in accidents involving teens between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Dr. David Yang, executive director of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, said “The number of fatal crashes involving teen drivers during the summer is an important traffic safety concern and research shows that young drivers are at greater risk and have higher crash rates. Through education, proper training, and involvement of parents, we can help our young drivers to become better and safer drivers, which in turn keeps the roads safer for everyone.”

Here are some of the highlights from the 100 Deadliest Days study:

  • 36% of fatal accidents involving teen drivers occurred between 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.
  • 1 out of 10 fatal crashes involved a teenage driver
  •  1 in 10 of all accidents caused by speeding involved a teen driver
  • 29% of fatal accidents involving teen drivers were speed-related
